'Not a fusty relic' says Welsh Rarebits reviewer

We can guarantee one thing. Pentre Mawr’s guests will be extremely well looked after. Your hosts Bre and Graham Carrington-Sykes have a stellar reputation for their professionalism and hospitality. They are natural hosts – and the picture gets better, for Graham is a maestro in the kitchen.

This Rarebit epitomises the hands-on approach that is truly personal. This fine old building has been the family home for 400 years. It’s full of family memorabilia, period furniture and fine antiques – you could say that it’s a mini-stately home.

But it’s no fusty relic. Pentre Mawr was updated prior to its opening as a country house. Nothing but the best has gone into bringing all contemporary comforts to a period setting. The fabulous bedrooms are swathed in fine fabrics (a Bre speciality) and come with grand, high-quality four-poster beds and superb bathrooms with freestanding claw-footed baths.

Pentre Mawr also springs a big surprise, South Africa- style. It's the first place in Britain to offer guests the choice of spacious canvas lodges that are the last word in comfort, with luxury bathrooms with underfloor heating, super king-size leather beds, spacious sitting areas, private terraces and hot tubs. They are located in the grounds, where you'll also find a walled garden with heated saltwater pool (a real suntrap in summer), and beyond, 190 acres of lush Vale of Clwyd meadow, parkland and woodland (with fishing rights).

Set alongside the beautiful Clwydian Range, Pentre Mawr is a haven of tranquillity with a strong appeal for couples or parties and makes an ideal venue for that special occasion. But do yourself a favour: don’t book just for the one night.

And Now...

To book this hotel, e mail or pick up the phone and speak to a real person.

Our new safari-style canvas lodges offer a romantic experience with lots of “wow” factor . Each lodge has underfloor heating, a superking size leather bed, roll top bath and private terrace with a hot tub, so while you’re under canvas, you’ll be supremely comfortable.
Our family has owned this house and the surrounding farm for 400 years and we aim to provide all our guests with warm, thoughtful and unobtrusive service in an unpretentious home-from-home atmosphere.

Dining is informal with a menu which changes daily according to what’s in season and available locally, and we offer house-party dining for larger groups.

There is plenty to see and do around here

We’re located in the Vale of Clywd between Ruthin, Denbigh and St Asaph, not far from Llangollen (pictured top right). If you want to get out and about, the surrounding Clywdian hills are great walking country.

Alternatively, take a ride on Snowdon’s steam railway, a ghost-walking tour of Ruthin, try your hand at fishing or climb the (spectacularly steep) old Roman road nearby. Then return to base and relax by the open air pool, enjoy a glass of champagne in your private hot tub, or refuel with a restorative afternoon tea by the fire.

Dogs are welcome; we’ve got a menagerie of resident cats and dogs and even provide doggy towels by the front door.
