About the Editor
“The Travel Editor of The Telegraph has asked me to stay in a few hotels and write about them,” Paddy told me, “and take you!” I spent the next eighteen years as ‘my husband’, never named, driver, bag carrier and shower tester. When we had travelled enough motorway miles, slept in enough hotel beds and eaten in enough restaurants, Paddy and I decided that a website using journalists’ reviews to describe the hotels would be popular and useful. I am delighted you are a reader and hope that you might become a contributor by writing to us.Find out how Paddy Burt can help you Press & Media Centre
About us
The Paddy Burt Collection of places to stay and eat is a website inspired by Paddy’s very popular weekly column, Room Service which ran from 1990 until August 2008 in the Daily Telegraph.
All the hotels you will see here have previously been featured in a newspaper or magazine where a journalist has written about what it was like to stay and eat there. From Paddy's years of experience on The Telegraph, it became obvious that a description by someone who had stayed somewhere was considerably more helpful to a potential guest than an advertisement which the hotelier had written.
There have always been books in which writers' opinions have been re-printed. Paddy's two 'Room Service' books were extremely popular but were, of course, out of date in some cases before they were even put on sale.
A website has given us the opportunity to overcome this problem. Our participating hotels can update all the information about themselves, apart from the original report, whenever they like. From the reader's point of view, this means they can dip into it, rather like a magazine in which there is always something new to either inform or entertain them.
From the journalist’s point of view, their work has a longer life and can be read many more people than the original which, sadly ends up in the recycling bin.
The hotels are encouraged to tell us about the changes they have made since the report was published, particularly if things were – let us say, not quite perfect. They will be telling us about special offers, news items, photos of their children or their dogs. In short, the site will be alive.
We would like you, the readers, to write in so that we can make a selection of your opinions for publication.
If you register with us we will e-mail you every week so that you can see what’s new. If you don’t register, you are still welcome to drop in whenever you like.
